Depends on what you need. Go here. http://www.radioreference.com/
You need to find out what kind of system they use in your area. The new Unidens are nice and they will do digital and trunking. Cost around $530 US.

Re: Help re: Police Scanner

Alot of law enforcement agencys are going to trunked / freq hopping systems. So what you want to do is ascertain wether or not your local LEA's use these systems. If not you can get by with a 60 dollar uniden from walmart. If they do use trunking, say Motorla Maxtracs you want some scanner that has trunking capability.

Check out http://www.dxing.com/selscan.htm

Do some reasarch, then plunk down the money, ask more questions if you have them. The first decision is trunking/no trunking.

It depends on the intended use.

In some cases, the acceleration and handling abilities of the car are more important.

Seems pretty simple to me lovemonster...
Buy a scanner(police no less) and use it.
You want it in a car, get a hard wired. You want it handheld, buy a handheld scanner.

What was the question again?

*sigh*

The guy living next to me in Ca. was a cop and he told me...... the same as a bullet proof vest, is legal to buy it but don't let them see you wear it.

Re: Help re: Police Scanner

Ponce, most of your posts are great...but don't waste our time with he said/she said posts....or "A guy told me at the swap meet that....."

It isnt illegal to wear a bullet proof vest, but there is a law and sentence enhancement if you wear a vest during the commision of a felony.

Re: Help re: Police Scanner

If your in a big city your probably going to want to go with a digital scanner like the Bearcat 396T. Otherwise you won't be able to pick up a lot of stuff. That 396T you linked to is probably the best scanner on the market right now. I would definitely start out with a portable scanner. If you look on radioreference.com it lists all the radio frequencies in your area by state & county. Look under RR database. It's pretty handy as a starter.

Good luck

Hahahahaha Monster........ see what happens if a cop stops you for a traffic violation and sees you wearing a vest ...... or try to get on a plane with one on, their theory is not what you are doing but what you could do.

Get back to me when you have the answer, or better yet...... call the airport and ask them if is ok to wear a vest because you are afraid of terrorists

Why would you even WANT to wear a vest on a plane? The danger is hitting the ground and the vest isn't going to help with that!

If you are wearing some kind of soft armor on a t-shirt carrier with a shirt over that, no one is going to notice or care. (This would be for "regular life" not trying to board an aircraft!) Sure, if you are driving down the road in that really bulky hard plate military armor, people are going to be very curious what you are up to. But that's not what most civilians would be wearing. A kevlar panel can be put in lots of places. Briefcase, inside the door frame of your car, wherever.

Having a scanner in you car falls under the burgular's tool law's basically its asumed that you intentd to use it to listen to the cops after you comit a crime & will be able to evade tham as you will know there locations. It is if fact illegal to have a scanner in you car in most states, Manny states even tried to go after Ham radios as most of those can recieve the same bands as well.

Looks like I am good to go in California. Like with the bullet proof vests, it all goes to whether you are using those "tools" in the commission of a crime.

Ponce is correct, here in Minnesota land of liberal lakes, it is a misdemeanor for one to be in a vehicle.

Just another sign of the Dictator of the Proletariet.

Soon it will be a grime to have gas in the car.

Most ham operators are law abiding and do not purchase their gear at Target.

Good point Master Ponce. I do support such a fee, however.
